Fargo Lodge 300 A.F. & A.M. was organized
July 18, 1882 in Fargo Springs. When C.R.I. & P.
Railroad by passed Fargo Springs and went to Liberal, members realized they
would soon have to move elsewhere.
The Lodge held an election and the majority voted to move to Arkalon, a thriving
cattle center, located seven or eight miles downstream on the Cimarron River.
However a number of the members wanted to move to Liberal.
including the Worshipful Master. After not being able to secure suitable
accommodation in Arkalon, the Lodge held another election and this time voted
to move to Liberal.
The first meeting in Liberal was held on June 17, 1889.
During these early years, the Lodge was one of the main community centers. Fargo
Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star sponsored many community affairs and
improvements. Many joint dinners were enjoyed by these two organizations while
working on various community projects.
The Lodge continued to grow at a normal rate until the great depression of the
thirties. Then a few dedicated members worked hard to maintain membership and
keep their Charter. Work for the Lodge picked up after the opening of the Liberal
Army Air Base. Many degrees were conferred on members in the service as a courtesy
to their home lodge.
Shortly after World War II, Fargo Lodge traded some lots they owned to an individual
who constructed a two-story building on the site and gave the Lodge a 99 year
rent free lease on the upper story.
The present Lodge was purchased in 1987 after a fire damaged the building. After
a year of the Brethren restoring the building it is now our present location.
